So Exactly What Do You Do?

Welcome to D Levy Antiques and Appraisals. I’m pleased to offer you interesting, quality antiques and fine art as well as qualified appraisals and related services. I can help you buy, sell, settle estates and more through the experiences and knowledge I’ve collected over many years.

So how did I get here?

As a child I was interested in history, which led me to collect coins and dig old bottles out of the ground in the woods at the long unused site of Savannah’s 19th century dump. Most who know me won’t be surprised that I still have the coins and many of those bottles, as well as lots of other fun stuff I’ve found.

More than 35 years ago I went to my first estate sale, in Atlanta, and bought my first vintage toy. I paid a dollar for a small, red metal car from the 1940s that probably wasn’t worth more than that. But I was hooked.

I went to more estate sales - and garage sales, auctions, shops, flea markets and the monthly antique shows in Atlanta. I started accumulating things I liked. As I learned more, I saw things in estate sales I had seen elsewhere for much higher prices. So I became a picker for Atlanta antique dealers. Selling to dealers paid for the finds I kept and gave me a little pocket money.

When a friend suggested we share space in an antique co-op, I gave retail a try. That led to selling at the Scott Antique Market, other shows in Atlanta and shows along the east coast including the fabled Atlantique City in New Jersey, one of the largest in the world.

As I’ve built the antique side of the business fulltime over the last few years, I’ve refined the type of objects I sell and focused on even better quality. I’ve also reworked my business model to include appraising, estate downsizing and dispersal and other services. I’ve enjoyed helping with estates and opinions of value for years, and it made sense to offer these services on a more professional level.

In 2019 I began the process of becoming an appraiser through the International Society of Appraisers. Last year I finished my primary course work and started appraising – just in time to shelter at home for the pandemic. House calls, a staple of appraising, stopped. Because I have a background in art and have dealt in it for a while, I decided to sharpen my appraisal skills with a specialty education and training in fine art.

I also rebranded my business and built this website.

As we ease back into a more normal life, I’m making house calls again. I’m vaccinated and I adhere to Covid-19 social distancing and mask-wearing protocols.

So here I am and that’s what I do. I’m looking forward to helping you with the purchase or sale of an antique, a vintage object or fine art; or with an appraisal, estate downsizing or dispersal; or one of the other services I offer. Please take a look at the website for more information and let me know how I can help you.

And yes, I still have that small red car. It brought me here.
